The Artist is de grote winnaar van de Oscars

Met vijf Oscars, waaronder die voor Beste Film, Beste Regie (Michel Hazanavicius) en Beste Acteur (Jean Dujardin), is de zwijgende film The Artist de grote winnaar geworden bij de 84th Academy Awards. Meryl Streep won haar derde Oscar voor The Iron Lady, en de 82-jarige Christopher Plummer kreeg zijn eerste Oscarbeeldje voor zijn bijrol in Beginners. Beste Vrouwelijke Bijrol ging naar Octavia Spencer voor The Help.

De prachtige familiefilm Hugo van Martin Scorsese sleepte eveneens vijf Oscars in de wacht, voornamelijk in de technische categorieën. George Clooney zag de Oscar voor zijn hoofdrol in The Descendants aan zijn neus voorbijgaan, maar de tragikomedie van Alexander Payne werd wel bekroond met de Oscar voor Beste Bewerkte Scenario. Beste Originele Scenario ging naar Midnight in Paris van Woody Allen, die zoals gebruikelijk niet aanwezig was.

De show, die goed in elkaar zat en een prachtig optreden van Cirque du Soleil bevatte, werd voor de negende keer gepresenteerd door komiek Billy Crystal.
